According to the book “Bioactive Compounds and Cancer”, bioactive substances found in the pomegranate play a useful role in the prevention of common forms of cancer.
• The pomegranate contains 124 different phytochemical compounds and its antioxidants have an anti-inflammatory effect upon cancer cells.
• Pomegranate juice made from the whole fruit has a higher concentration of ellagitannins; as well as punicalagins, the polyphenol with the greatest antioxidant capacity known with regard to its molecular weight.
• Freshly squeezed pomegranate juice Granatum Plus Complex natural, is made from parts of the pomegranate that are not directly consumed from the fresh fruit and which are made into a product that is unique on the European market.
Madrid, 8th of July 2010. Prof. David Heber, Director of the Department of Medicine at the Centre for Human Nutrition of UCLA University (Los Angeles), has just published the book “Bioactive Compounds and Cancer”, in which he proves the pomegranate’s power to prevent common forms of cancer. Clinical studies have shown that prescribing pomegranate juice, which is made using all the parts of the fruit, reduces the specific prostate antigen following primary treatment administered via surgery or radiation.
The pomegranate is a great source of vitamins C and E, and potassium, as well as containing polyphenols, which are responsible for its high antioxidant activity. According to research carried out by Miguel Hernández University, the high antioxidant capacity of the pomegranate is found in its skin and seeds and not in its edible interior as believed until now.
One of the key points refers to the research carried out by the team of Dr. Juan Carlos Espin, Professor of research at the Spanish National Research Council at CEBAS (Centre for edaphology and applied biology) in Murcia and the second most quoted Spanish researcher in the scientific field of Food Science and Technology, Nutrition, Diet and Health: ”In the year 2004 we were the first in the world to prove that the pomegranate’s most important polyphenols (elagitannins, which are the cause of the juice’s high antioxidant activity and are used as a reference of quality of the juice, as well as giving it its astringency) are not absorbed by the human body itself, but are turned into simpler substances by the intestinal flora known as urolithins. These in turn can reach high levels of concentration in the blood, and remain in the body for up to 4 days after consuming foods rich in ellagitannins. The anticancer activity of these urolithins has been proven and we have determined, also for the first time, that these urolithins reach the man’s prostate, where their effects can be seen.” He continues: “The greatest evidence to exist, as far as the pomegranate is concerned, is related to its cardioprotective activity, as it reduces the concentration and oxidation of LDL cholesterol and improves the elasticity of the arteries.”
The pomegranate, consisting mainly of water (80%) and sugars (17%), has proven its efficiency in different conditions such as arteriosclerosis and hypertension, menopause, inflammatory processes, etc. In addition, it reduces arterial pressure and glucose levels and improves heart perfusion by 50%, for which reason it is being used in patients who have suffered heart attacks.
Coinciding with the publication of the book and within the framework of the project “Proyecto Granatum Europa” that, with the integration of Spanish and European food technology companies and by combining research and development, creates products based on the research carried out by Miguel Hernández University and other prestigious scientists from Spanish and European universities, the first freshly squeezed pomegranate juice made from pomegranates grown in Spain, has been released onto the market with its unique combination, including freshly squeezed pomegranate juice with pomegranate skin and seed extract: Granatum Plus Complex natural.
All of the raw materials used in Granatum Europa's products come from farming cooperatives in the province of Alicante, where 95% of the pomegranate crops in the European Union are concentrated.
This freshly squeezed pomegranate juice combines the antioxidants from the seed of the pomegranate’s arils, with the antioxidants contained in the skin of the fruit, as well as a unique compound found in the pomegranate, an extract from its inner seed which is a polyunsaturated fatty acid known as "punicic acid", better known as OMEGA 5, a compound only found in its natural form in the pomegranate. Proyecta Granatum Europa's policy is to offer high-quality products so that, for little more than a Euro a day, the consumer may enjoy a natural product with a high antioxidant capacity.
